Welcome to Lake View Post High School Handbook For Seniors And Their Parents.
This handbook is designed as a resource tool for Lake View High School Juniors, Seniors, and your families to provide valuable information and guidance about the responsibilities to be carried by you in the upcoming months.
The Handbook has three main purposes:
●To make the college application and admission process easier to understand, especially for parents who are experiencing the college application process for the first time.
●To help relieve the stress and anxiety of students (and parents) as they go through the process of post high school planning.
●To give valuable resources to students and parents
Don’t be scared or overwhelmed
The college application process can be a stressful and time- consuming process. It requires planning and research. Students who begin this process late or without organization and planning often reduce the full range of opportunities they might have otherwise been able to access. They often miss deadlines, rush to complete tasks that require greater attention and care, sometimes make poor decisions because of misinformation, and often feel greater stress.
At the same time, there is order to this process. With planning and paying attention to important deadlines, information given in divisions, and Senior Halls every Lake View Junior an Senior is capable of learning and managing it very effectively. In addition, students with questions can drop in as often as they like at lunchtime or after school to see Ms. Young. Both students and parents with questions are welcome to email (tkyoung@cps.edu) or call (773) 534-5440 Ext. 29868.
Please carefully read this handbook as a family. Students, we especially urge you to be actively involved in this process, along with appropriate parental involvement, since your future will be determined by what actions you take within the next ten months.
Common Myths About College
1. I/We can’t afford college.
A College education is not cheap, but there are numerous financial aid programs available to make college affordable for every family.
Truthfully, you can’t afford not to go to college. A college education is one of the best assets for rapid changes in the job market and economy that we face over the next 20 years. A strong educational background will enable you to learn skills for jobs that haven’t even been invented yet.
2. ACT (SAT) is the strongest factor in determining who is accepted into college.
Majority of colleges look at your ACT(SAT) score as part of the overall college application. Colleges look more closely at the courses you have taken and the grades that you have received in those courses. They also look at who you are as a person and how you have progressed academically, personally, your particular circumstances and what is available to you.
Don’t let your ACT(SAT) score hold you back from applying to colleges that you are truly interested in.
3. There is only one or two colleges that you can attend
There are numerous college choices available to you. You are in control for much of this process. You control where and when you apply, and when you have letters of admissions sent to you, you chose what college you will attend.
