Freshmen Time Line

Fall (Sept.-Nov.)

1. Stay organized by: • Establishing routines to help your day run more smoothly.  For example, organize things before going to bed every night.      • Avoiding distractions.  Social medical, television, video games, computers – these can all be huge distractions.  Schedule times for these activities and consider “parking” your cell phone away from you when you have to study or work on assignments.      

 • Breaking  down assignments for the week. For example, if you have a report you have to complete by the end of the week, divide the work by working on research one day, the outline another and first draft before it’s due.                         • Keeping your backpack neat.  Use three-ring binders for class; use folders for homework assignments and flash drives for saving your work.

2. Manage Your time Well
• Use class time and study at home
• Create a study plan at the end of each day
• Eliminate disruptions (social media, cell phones, television…)

3. Learn to be an advocate for yourself.  When you feel you are struggling, reach out to your teachers.  Find tutoring if available and speak up when you don’t understand.  Communication is key.

Winter (Dec.-Feb.)

1. Improve your reading skills by reading at least 20 minutes per day (newspapers, magazines, books).                      

 2. To begin developing a resume, start gathering a list of award, distinctions, clubs or sports you joined  or plan to join this year.3. Volunteer at not-for-profit organizations to complete your service learning hours.  Get involved in activities that interest you or let you explore career interests.4. Ask your teachers or counselor about Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses available.  You should consider taking more challenging courses sophomore year. 

Spring (March-May)

1.  Get involved in one or more extracurricular activities.  You should find a balance between school, social life, family and extracurricular activities.
2. Volunteer at not-for-profit organizations to complete your service learning hours.  Get involved in activities that interest you or let you explore career interests.
3. Ask your teachers or counselor about Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses available.  You should consider taking more challenging courses sophomore year. 

Summer (June-Aug.)

1. Make every year count!
