Music Classes 

 

Beginning Band

This class offers the band experience at the beginning level.  The instruments taught are flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba and percussion.  No experience is necessary – only the will and desire to play an instrument.  Musical topics are introduced such as reading, music notation, analyzing and evaluating music, as well as composing and improvising simple melodies.  The students present a Winter and Spring Concert.  

Intermediate Band

Students continue learning and refining the concepts and skills taught in Beginning Band.  An emphasis is placed on repertoire and reading skills.  The students present a Winter and Spring Concert.

Advanced Band

This course covers advanced topics in ensemble performance and expands upon previously learned skills and concepts.  Its repertoire represents different genres, periods and cultures.  Our goal, through the use of a wide variety of music, is to assist the development of aesthetic judgment, independence and a greater musical understanding in students. Numerous concerts, contests and public performances are required throughout the year. 

Jazz Band

This course includes the study and performance of a variety of jazz and latin jazz band literature along with the continuous development of musical knowledge and skills. Various jazz styles and improvisational techniques are explored as well as the cultural and historical significance of this art form.  Numerous concerts, contests and public performances are required throughout the year. 

Beginning Male and Female Choirs

In the beginning choruses, students learn the fundamentals of healthy vocal production with introductions to reading and analyzing music.   No experience is necessary – just the desire to explore the possibilities of the human voice.  The students present a Winter and Spring Concert.  

Intermediate Mixed Chorus

Students continue learning and refining the concepts and skills taught in the Beginning Level Choruses. Emphasis is placed on exploring more challenging and diverse repertoire, and developing reading in preparation for membership in the Advanced Level Choruses.  The students present a Winter and Spring Concert.  

Advanced Mixed Chorus

This course covers advanced concepts in ensemble performance, music reading and analysis, and male and female vocal production.  Students will study high quality, challenging repertoire from varying genres, exploring historical, theoretical and aesthetic components with the goal of outstanding choral and vocal musicianship.  Numerous concerts, contests and public performances are required throughout the year.  

Advanced Females Chorus

This course covers advanced concepts in ensemble performance, music reading and analysis, and female vocal production.  Students will study high quality, challenging repertoire from varying genres, exploring historical, theoretical and aesthetic components with the goal of outstanding choral and vocal musicianship.  Numerous concerts, contests and public performances are required throughout the year. 

General Music

This course provides an introduction to the basic elements of music including melody, harmony, rhythm, form, texture and timbre.  The objective is to acquaint students with the significant musical compositions from major historical periods and to show how they reflect societies, cultures and civilizations past and present. 

AP Music Theory

The Advanced Placement Music Theory course enables students to engage in college level work in the areas of reading and analyzing notated music and aural training. Particular emphasis will be placed upon developing listening skills, sight­singing ability, and knowledge of topics including keys, scales, intervals, chords, harmonic progressions and chromaticism. The successful student  will gain the skills necessary to function intelligently in any musical situation. Some universities grant a Humanities credit for scoring high on the AP Music Theory Exam.  The course requires concurrent enrollment in band or choir and teacher recommendation.  Other students with experience in music will also be considered.
