Student Focus: Photography

Derek R. is currently a senior at LVHS. He is enrolled in Photo 1, but has already been exposed to the art of photography through outside classes and his own enthusiasm. Derek shared this image, along with several others that really demonstrate how photography is truly an art form. The following is Derek’s commentary on his work: “This has to be one of my favorite shots ever taken. My technique is called good-timing or the decisive moment. The mood and supporting idea for this photo is that happiness can be shown in many ways. The photo was shot at a marketplace in Baguio, Philippines. I noticed this homeless woman was having a hard time begging. While I hid my camera, I noticed her face seemed to change when she saw me clicking my camera. I kept clicking and smiling back  as she stared for a second. After that, she disappeared into the crowd of shoppers. Once I looked through my photos, her mysterious smile seemed to make my day and the photo captured a moment where she felt different from the crowd.”
